EXTRAIT

FREDERICK CARDER Portrait of a Glassmaker [By] Paul V Gardner AprilOct 1985 Paul Vickers 1908 Carder Frederick Corning Museum of Glass Rockwell Museum Gardner 9780872901117 Books Reviews

  • I have been a collector of Steuben art glass for almost 30 years -- initially, finding any kind of in-depth, let alone useful, information about the man (Frederick Carder), his art, and the history and progression of his work - the beautiful colors, to transitioning to and perfecting "colorless" works of art glass (the simplicity of the early martini glasses, ashtrays, etc. are sleek and beautiful favorites.) This was THE FIRST, and I still believe it to be one of the best and most definitive guides on the history, designs, and the progression from the stunning early works in color glass to the perfecting of both decorative pieces and the lines of tableware patterns designed for the home (table glassware.)

Ghost World Daniel Clowes 9780224060882 Books Reviews

  • The very famous Ghost World is a must read for fans of graphic novels but is certainly not for everyone, it's for fans of the more intellectual graphic novels that rose to prominence during the late 80s and 90s. The story follows two High School age girls as they go thorough that awkward phase of life from High School to Adulthood, while that sounds like a terribly cliched theme, the stories in Ghost World are unique and range from somber to humorous. While I really enjoyed the very short volume, I can understand why some readers may not enjoy the overall experience. The characters are often cruel and nihilistic in how they view everything around them and their interactions with others is often short and mean. Certainly, it is not a requirement to like every character in a text, but it can be off putting for some readers. The characters do grow over the stories and I really enjoyed the very quick read (the whole text can be read over a few hours or in a sitting,) fans of the movie will also enjoy this although the film has a more complete narrative. I recommend this to fans of graphic novels and fans of independent films, music and books.
  • This comic beautifully illustrates the beginning of the tragic "middle period" between being a teenager and an adult, but luckily the jaded, angsty and hilarious observations of Enid and Rebecca have you in stitches the whole time. Although they are already aware of the scam that is adulthood, these two show their vulnerability when faced with the inevitable existential crisis that having to grow up presents.
  • Easily one of the best novels I've ever read, graphic or otherwise. The dialogue is so sharp and clear that I felt like I were listening to a real conversation between two teenage girls. It's also one of the best portrayal of teenage girls I've ever seen--Rebecca and Enid were strange, funny, troubled, and totally unlike the usual "silly, boy-crazy girl" stereotype. The world needs more female characters like these--not afraid to be loud, edgy, and snarky, and refusing to conform with society's expectations.
  • I have a theory about books vs. movies If you read the book first -- it being your introduction to the story -- then the movie will be a bit of a letdown. Since I saw the movie first, based on a friend's recommendation, I went out and bought the book afterwards.
The comic book is darker and monochromatic, versus the movie's beautiful use of primary and pastel colours. That makes the book and movie equal for me, and gives one the choice of alternate "Ghost" worlds. But the book is written in episodic installments, and is therefore less unified than the movie; like many comic books, this one is an ongoing serial, and works great as a character study.
Where the movie departs from the book is the development of a plot which involves one of the book's minor characters (the bearded guy with whom Enid and Rebecca make a fake blind date as a practical joke). In the movie, the bearded guy is shorn of his facial hair and re-emerges as Seymour (played by Steve Buscemi) as the catalyst for a major tunrning point in Enid's life. I really think that by collaborating with director and screen-writer Terry Zwigoff that Clowes made a work of art a masterpiece.
Nonetheless, I found the book very compelling, but really do recommend reading it before seeing the movie. I really like Daniel Clowes' stripped-down, stylised drawings. Like the movie, you can really get lost in this book. That's a lot coming from me, because I don't get into most comic books. This one, though, speaks to me.
  • With "Ghost World" Clowes is up there with the most astute of cynics (Bierce, Twain, Vonnegut) making everything and everyone look pretty pointless with a helpful dose of comedy and true, thoughtful introspection. If you've ever been both young and disillusioned by society - or at least appreciate a story of isolated youth - I'd be surprised if this book didn't speak to you.

You don't have to "utterly loathe yourself" like protagonist Enid Coleslaw to really "get it", but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't make it all that much more poignant.
  • The dialog is real and the characters are believable, and the art provides a nice vehicle, supportive without distracting.
A random chapter in the life of best friends, it’s for mature audiences - not a kid’s comic.
It’s poetic in it's own way - gets you thinking about what you want in life.
  • The movie is superior to this comic in every way. I only gave it two stars because if not for the comic, there’d be no movie.
  • I am not personally a fan of this kind of illustrative literature, but this one is a winner. Apparently the film is awesome as well. Big hit with the older teen and 20's crowd, but anyone who appreciates literature a little outside the box would enjoy this one.

200 Kitchens Confessions of a Nomad cook eBook Gawain Barker Reviews

  • 200 Kitchens is an entertaining read from the get go. I would describe it as a collection of short stories, that are stitched together to tell an honest but optimistic look into the life of a nomad chef. From chasing giant Goannas out of the kitchen on a remote island in far North Queensland. To the dreary dungeon like kitchen in the belly of a Swiss hotel. Once started its hard to put down. But, it's also a lot of fun sharing the short stories around a camp fire. Its easy reading and I would highly recommend 200 Kitchens to anyone who loves food, adventure and a good laugh.
  • 200 Kitchens is centered around two of my favorite subjects, food and travel. It was very interesting to experience different cultures and personalities through the lens of food and its' preparations. You can see where the authors experiences have shaped his own value system, and how food can be the most effective form of diplomacy.
  • Nicely paced entertaining read - with genuine laugh out loud moments, nice ruminations, and with settings from the exotic to the every-day painted in lively word imagery. A great insiders view of life in the commercial world of food. Thoroughly enjoyable!
  • An interesting insight into the behind the scenes life of a chef in a variety of kitchens. Very enjoyable, would highly recommend.
  • The author's story is ostensibly about cooking, and it is, but it is also about personalities, relationships, and perseverance. The book travels through many times, places, and circumstances (e.g. the rain forest above the great barrier reef in northeastern Australia or the bowels of a horrid Swiss hotel) and through it all he cooks and perseveres. He is clearly a good chef and a dependable hand; and his ability to manage a wide variety of challenging situations (as well as lucidly describe them) gives us the opportunity to participate in the mayhem with him. He is a funny and clever guy and I enjoyed reading about him. Give it a go.

  • Excellent! This is a cookbook that completes the procedure of the novices which are glancing through a book that causes them in getting free from overweight and from sad eating routine that has extended their calories. This radiant load of Mediterranean eating routine has given the course of action concerning your eating routine issue.I purchased this book to see how the Mediterranean eating regimen works. There is a point by point portrayal of how to satisfy it what sustenance to eat and furthermore there are a few recipes.I heard that this eating regimen is useful for shedding pounds so I would like to get more fit. I highly recommend it!
  • I have not tried a single recipe that I did not like. I have to admit that I skipped some as I did not like all the ingredients. I use this daily, and have discovered a new and healthier way to eat! I would definitely recommend this cookbood to anyone who likes to cook and try new recipes. Having the nutritional breakdown of each recipe was a great added bonus as I am trying to eat healthier. Very extensive variety of recipes. Each one detailed with not only with the "how" but also the "why". Covers salads, entree's, desserts and more. Great glossary of terms found in the back. A great addition to our kitchen as my wife and I try to eat healthier. Great book for eating the healthy Mediterranean way.
  • Cool! One of the best cookbooks I've ever had. We don't cook from it everyday; but, we've used many recipes from the book. Every one we've made has been extremely tasty. The book explains why something works. It explains it well enough that you can figure out what to substitute in the event you don't have or can't find one of the suggested ingredients. Amazing to read it again and again! Awesom
  • Im so so happy! I am demanding on cookbooks. I like flavor, I like frugality, and I need my meals to be gluten free. These recipes are very flavorful and the reviews on the best brands for items like sardines and anchovies are very helpful. Some of the meals, especially the bean section, are economical. The others are worth the price. Finally, many recipes are gluten free as written, and many of the others can easily be adjusted. I feel better when I eat in this genre. Thank you author!
  • I like this book! The Mediterranean Diet isn't about cutting out certain foods or counting calories. It's a more holistic approach to healthy, happy living through diet, exercise, and communal dining based on traditions from the Mediterranean region. It's delicious and easy to follow, and includes some happy side effects such as weight loss, better heart health, reduced incidents of cancer and Alzheimer's, better skin and more lustrous hair. This book outlines the Mediterranean Diet's pyramid guide to meals based on good carbs and essential fats (fruits, veggies, and grains); seafood; poultry; cheese and yogurt; and on top meats and sweets. Many of the 150 recipes suggest a wine pairing, like Balsamic-Glazed Black Pepper Salmon with a light Pinot Noir, and are perfect for enjoying with family and friends.
  • This book is splendid. I inclined such huge numbers of successful things from this book. I discovered everything that I have to begin my Mediterranean eating routine. Creator gave straightforward supper plan. I can make my own suppers after expand my insight into sustenances permitted on this eating routine. That is the excellence of this diet;it is so adaptable. It was so useful. I was really astounded by perceiving what number of imperative recommendations accumulated in such a short book. Creator completed a phenomenal activity. I'll most likely prescribe this book to my loved ones. I really appreciate this book. Thanks to creator of this book
  • was worried that this book was only made for the official Instant Pot. Being desperate for any kind of recipes for my "other brand" pressure cooker, I gave it a try. It worked out fine! I was amazed that it wasn't all that hard and the directions are pretty basic. I love the size of the book, the variety of the foods you can make, and the simple ingredients. So far, I really appreciate this book!
  • Who knew eating healthy could be so delicious. I am in week 2 of the plan and have enjoyed every meal. The ingredients for the meals are at my local store, and I live in a smaller community. The recipes are easy to follow, and the utensils needed to cook the meals are normal utensils. I highly recommend this book as I feel better, the food is delicious, it is easy to prepare, and simple to find in stores. If a person reads the intro, the recipes, and purchases items on the already prepared shopping list, it is a near painless process to move to healthy/delicious food. Prior to purchasing this book, I did little to no cooking. Reading the recipes and suggestions for preparation prior to cooking has proved to be most effective at facilitating the cooking process even with a novice cook like me. I am losing weight, which is somewhat of a surprise as I feel satisfied (not deprived or starved).

Through works of art, photographs, and writings, this volume explores Picasso’s fascination with tribal art and the influences he repeatedly drew upon for his own oeuvre.

“African art? I don’t know it.” With this provocative tone, Picasso tried to deny his relationship with art from outside of Europe. However, through hundreds of archival documents and photographs, this volume illustrates how tribal art from Africa, Oceania, the Americas, and Asia was a recurring source of inspiration for the artist.

Side-by-side comparisons illustrate the links between Picasso’s oeuvre and diverse tribal arts. In both, we find the same themes—nudity, sexuality, impulses, death, and more—along with parallel artistic expressions of those themes—such as disfiguration or destruction of the body. The volume is completed with a chronology of the relevant works and photographs of the artist in his studio.

Marjorie Maytime Classic Reprint Carolyn Wells 9780483988088 Books Reviews

  • A week ago I bought this book used showing a 1911 copyright. It had been a Christmas present from an aunt to her niece in 1929.

I loved the book. It is beautifully written. What a pleasure not to stumble over incorrect or ungrammatical language. From what I learned from my mother, born in 1894, and her scrapbook, the family and their escapades are believable.

Born in 1862, Carolyn Wells was in incredibly talented author and poet..and that's an understatement. She wrote 170 books. She wrote comic strips for newspapers.

Today she is best known for her light verse, particularly for several classic limericks.

Read all about her on wikipedia and don't miss the limerick at the end of the article.
  • I was delighted to find one of my dear childhood favorites back in print! Though the six Marjorie books were popular well before my time, I was enchanted by my mother's copy of Marjorie's New Friend and eventually collected the whole series at flea markets and antique stores. Marjorie's Maytime takes the Maynard family on a month-long trip in their new automobile from their home in Rockwell, NY to New York City, and through New England, finally ending in Boston. Quite a luxury in 1911!

The book's language is dated (which is part of its charm), and there are some stereotypes we try to avoid today. Of course the manners are dated as well, but Mr. and Mrs. Maynard teach proper behavior to their children without the harshness or moralizing that can offend modern readers of the Elsie Dinsmore books, for example. This family has fun together (and the money to live in enviable comfort, though the books describe it as simple); and the books were intended simply for pleasure and entertainment. Readers of the American Girls books might try these for stories actually written in the style of the times.

Java Messaging Programming Series Eric Bruno 9781584504184 Books Reviews

  • As other reviewers pointed out, this is indeed a nice work on Java Messaging. For the most part, the concepts are presented clearly and I had no trouble following them. What's good about this book is that there are enough examples to play with and most of them indeed work as promised in the book. This book uses ActiveMQ 2.1 for JMS Provider while the current version is 5.x. However, the ActiveMQ 2.1 libraries are included in the CD, so using those you will have no problem in running most of the examples. I could not get the examples that use Java Web Service Developer Pack (JWSDP) to work however (chapters 8 and 9). This book uses JWSDP 1.4 version which I could not find on the web (at the time of this writing only JWSDP 2.0 is available for download on Sun's site). The book says that JWSDP 1.4 is included on the CD but it was not. Except for these minor issues, this book is worth reading and owning. Highly recommended.
  • The book is good in that it provides many details of the Java messaging. The author sounds knowledgeble of WEB technologies and shares his knowledge. It is definetely worthy reading, maybe even a must.

But with all good parts, it have some shortcomings. The most important idea behind messaging asynchronous vs synchronous, is discussed inadequately, I would even say complete failure. For example, claim that asynchronous processes are always faster is simply wrong. Also discussion of transactions is far from perfect. In general, it is impossible to discuss asynchronous vs synchronous, as well as transactions, without mentioning threads, because its all about threads. But the author never ever mentioned the word "tread"; there is an impression that he doesn't understand this subject himself. As the result, important theoretical issues, which are in the core of messaging, are not explained; even worse, the book is confusing on those issues.
  • Although the book uses a specific JMS engine for the examples the details and the concepts were all right on and covered everything I needed for JMS. It literally saved my bacon, especially the peer to peer stuff over topics. Whew!

    Super job.

    Sam
  • excellent
  • As we look at how much we use the web, it is sometimes hard to remember just how new this concept of worldwide packet switching really is. Java was started as a new language before a lot of the new concepts like XML and SOAP were conceived. But as a new language it has been able to move into using these new concepts faster than nearly any other language.

What I especially liked about this book was the first chapter. So often computer books start with programming. This one starts with a description of what we're trying to do here. He gives several examples of the types of communications that he is going to cover in the book. I had a particular application in mind when I got the book, but in reading the first chapter I began to see several other ways that messaging would help our system.

After the first chapter, I've go to say that it's a pretty regular computer software book. It tells you how to do the things that you want to do. It is quite clear on all the different software protocols, packages, and philosophies. Basically it is all that a Java programmer needs to implement messaging in Java.

The CD included with the book gives you all the sample code from the book, as well as the complete messaging toolkit and several open source tools.
  • Excellent introduction to messaging, including healthy portions on JMS and web services.

The writing style is clear, consistent, and to the point. Probably what I liked most was this no-nonsense writing style. If it's on a page, it's important to understand. The author doesn't waste your time with irrelevant discussions or out of scope topics.

Editing and code presentation are top notch, making it easy to follow, and build upon from one example to the next. The author also shares some gotchas and considerations that I wouldn't have expected to see in an introductory discussion which were particularly valuable.

Another great feature is one of the drawbacks of the book. The framework presented in the book is elegant, but in many of the examples, there is too much cognitive overhead involved in grokking the level of abstraction in the framework, and this takes away from actually learning the concepts. I would have liked to see more non-framework code for the introduction, which is then tied together with the framework.
  • Eric Bruno's JAVA MESSAGING explores different ways of messaging using Java software, from JavaBean events and JMS to SOAP. Web programmers receive all the basics to using these features, tips on how and why to use each feature and when to choose something else, how to combine features, and more. The basics of Java communication processes are revealed in chapters which form 'classes' to link related information in a logical progression. An excellent, basic foundation for Java users.
  • good book. author has explained it very well and do try chapter code it will help understanding concept easily.

Endgame Tome 3 Les règles du jeu French Edition eBook James Frey Nils JohnsonShelton Jean Esch Reviews

  • To poorly satirize a brilliant poet, "this is the way the book ends, not with a bang but with a whimper."

Endgame Rules of the Game fails to deliver the action-packed, mind-blowing conclusion it seemed to have been set up for by the previous two installments. After reading and enjoying the first two books, I was pleasantly surprised by the authors' willingness to take risks to genuinely surprise their audience. They didn't seem to rely on worn out love, revenge, or savior tropes that are so commonly found throughout modern literature. However, for whatever reason, this willingness to surprise seems to have devolved into a incoherent and rushed attempt to finish off what could have been an excellent trilogy.

Although I would like to refrain from spoilers, I will say that the authors relied upon a singular plot device in the final conclusion that not only felt forced and poorly explained but also was also no where to be found in the previous installments. Additionally, in this third book, the authors' attempt to shock results in an unearned conclusion for several characters that one has almost no personal attachment to. Although I recognize this could be a conscious choice by the authors, it results in a complete sense of apathy at the conclusion and significantly takes away from the impact the trilogy had been building to. Ultimately, it felt like a cheap attempt to shock the reader that came at the cost of an effective and satisfying conclusion.

All in all, despite thoroughly enjoying the prior two installments and the off-shoot novels, I am deeply disappointed with the conclusion of this trilogy. Although it had the chance to be something different, this ending goes out with a fizzle and will probably doom the series to a lifetime of bargain bins and Barnes and Noble clearance sections.
  • reading this the ending was very unsatisfying and I need more out of the book and it's characters! ***spoiler*** the writers I felt were being lazy when they just killed off sara and jago! I needed more out of them and felt as if they were just thrown out! I really wanted more of those characters because they were the main character in the first book and usually the main characters live till the end! overall the beginning of the book was good but the end was very unsatisfying.
  • The way this ended reminds me of the crappy ending in Divergent series. HIGHLY disappointed!!! The writers should be ashamed... do not buy this book. Simply, imagine your own conclusion I promise it will be better than this.
  • First 2 books kept me captivated, this book had a disappointing ending. Felt the author just hurried the ending.
  • All the details were wrapped up. Story did not end as expected, however, It is a YA book. Enjoyable airplane read.
  • Annoying and ended weird. Wish I hadn't waisted my time or paid full price.
  • My son loves this series!
  • The first two books of this series were very good. The first and second were closer to 500 pages. This one is a measley 300 and some pages. That should have given me a warning right there. I still wanted to read it though! Please do not waste your money. What was a promising series ends very abruptly with no explanation of motives. People also die very abruptly with no furthering of the series. I also don't understand how the players that lived did. They weren't the most important characters. The hedge fund industry changed Wall Street. Its pioneers didn’t lay railroads, build factories, or invent new technologies. Rather, they made their billions through financial speculation, by placing bets in the market that turned out to be right more often than not. In hedge fund circles, Steven A. Cohen was revered as one of the greatest traders who ever lived. But that image was shattered when his fund, SAC Capital, became the target of a seven-year government investigation. Prosecutors labeled SAC a “magnet for market cheaters” whose culture encouraged the relentless pursuit of “edge”—and even “black edge,” which is inside information—and the firm was ultimately indicted and pleaded guilty to charges related to a vast insider trading scheme. Cohen, himself, however, was never charged. Black Edge is a riveting legal thriller that raises urgent questions about the power and wealth of those who sit at the pinnacle of high finance and how they have reshaped the economy.

"If you want to understand the depth of corruption that prevails on Wall Street, a good place to start is New Yorker staff writer Sheelah Kolhatkar‘s admirable new book, Black Edge: Inside Information, Dirty Money, and the Quest to Bring Down the Most Wanted Man on Wall Street.

A loathsome human being

The central character is this superb piece of investigative journalism is Steven A. Cohen, the founder of a hedge fund named SAC Capital Advisors. Cohen is clearly a loathsome human being—obsessed with greed, contemptuous of the law, and ruthless beyond compare. For example, here is an eyewitness account of a statement he made to the traders at his fund while in the midst of ugly divorce proceedings with his first wife. “‘I just got ripped off by my wife,’ he said . . . ‘I’m going to make it all back by cutting your payouts.'” This was not bluster: he actually did it, reducing their compensation from 30% of profits to 25% and increasing his own correspondingly. The author also notes that “he went out of his way to abuse people and belittle them.”

However, Cohen is also undeniably brilliant. Occasionally he’s referred to as the greatest stock trader in Wall Street history. Cohen’s instinct is apparently matchless. Obviously, too, he was diabolically clever in shielding himself from responsibility for the illegal actions he forced his employees to take. After decade-long investigations by the FBI and the SEC, Cohen was forced to close down his hedge fund, but he escaped from prosecution, paying only a fine that was modest on the scale of his wealth. (Cohen is now estimated to have a net worth of $13 billion. That’s billion with a B.) Kolhatkar makes clear that despite his undisputed brilliance as a trader, he broke insider trading laws and regulations to gain most of his fortune.

How hedge funds operate

It helps to understand what hedge funds really are and what they do. Originally, hedge funds were designed to “hedge” or protect the assets of extremely wealthy individuals, pension funds, and other high-net-worth institutions. You can find an explanation of classic hedging strategies in plain English here. Over time, however, as the industry became more competitive, hedge fund managers increasingly gravitated away from investing and took up trading, eventually even trading in and out of stocks over fractions of a second. Kolhatkar explains that “the name hedge fund lost any connection to the careful strategy that had given such funds their name and came to stand, instead, for unregulated investment firms that essentially did whatever they wanted.”

The role of hedge funds in the economy

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that hedge funds like Steve Cohen’s invested in the stock market like Main Street’s typical small investor. Kolhatkar quotes an email from one of Cohen’s traders three weeks before earnings of computer manufacturer Dell, Inc. were to be announced: “‘gm looking 17.5% vs. street 18.3%. Doesn’t sound good.'” In translation this jargon would read “Dell’s gross margin is anticipated by insiders to be 17.5% in the most recent quarter as opposed to estimates by Wall Street analysts of 18.3%.” In other words, this trivial difference in earnings for Dell for a three-month period would cause hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of dollars worth of the company’s shares to be sold, thus depressing its stock price. This means, of course, that Dell’s board of directors and top executives would do everything within their power to reverse that decline in the next quarter, regardless of the long-term consequences to the company, its employees, its investor-stockholders, and the economy at large. In this way, Wall Street distorts the American (and ultimately the world) economy. That makes no sense at all except for the gamblers who engage in day-to-day and minute-to-minute stock trading.

Given the complexity of the financial markets, it’s too easy to imagine that hedge funds are just one minor element of the problems they pose for the economy. “By 2015,” Kolhatkar writes, “hedge funds controlled almost $3 trillion in assets around the world and were a driving force behind the extreme wealth disequilibrium of the early twenty-first century.” A couple of numbers convey a sense of the magnitude of the problem caused by hedge funds: as Forbes magazine writes, “In total, the 25 highest-earning hedge fund managers and traders made a combined $12 billion in 2015.” The top earner, James Simons, logged an estimated total of $1.65 billion. In one year! The average top manager of a hedge fund earned nearly half a billion dollars that year.

Should there be an upper limit on compensation?

I recognize that many Americans are convinced there should be no upper limit on income. I disagree because I do not believe that anyone whatsoever could possibly provide enough benefit to society to warrant compensation of half a billion dollars a year—and because I know that such high levels of income are only possible because the U.S. tax laws are rigged to favor the superrich and disadvantage the rest of us. To grasp how much money these numbers represent, consider this: in 2015, the same year cited by Forbes, the single highest-paid corporate executive earned $156 million. Thus, the average top-25 hedge fund CEO received more than three times as much money. And I know no one who would pretend that $156 million represents fair compensation for anyone for a single year’s work.

Seeking a “black edge”

In trading, hedge fund managers routinely came to seek out an information “edge” to reduce or eliminate the risk in their trades. As Kolhatkar explains, a “black edge” is information obtained in obviously illegal ways, such as paying a company insider for advance word of important developments in that company’s fortunes. “Gray edge [is] trickier. Any analyst doing his job well would come across this sort of information all the time. For example, an investor-relations person at a company might say something like ‘Yeah, things are trending a little lower than we thought . . .'” This may or may not constitute insider information. The lawyers decide. “White edge,” of course, is “readily available information that anyone could find in a research report or a public document.” Much, perhaps nearly all, the information on which Steve Cohen based his trades was on the “black edge.”

Hedge funds and the corruption of the American economy

Kolhatkar did not pick Cohen and SAC Capital Advisors arbitrarily. The fund posted average gains of 30 percent per year over 20 years. Anyone who has investment experience knows that it’s virtually impossible to earn such high profits year after year for such a long period entirely by legal means. However, SAC Capital Advisors was in many ways typical of the hedge fund industry. Kolhatkar again: “When one trader was asked if he knew of any that didn’t traffic in inside information, he said: ‘No, they would never survive.'”

The corruption fostered by the hedge fund industry extended far beyond Wall Street. In their scramble for insider information to give themselves a black edge, hedge fund managers bought off doctors throughout the country. “In 2005,” the author notes, “Journal of the American Medical Association published a finding that almost 10 percent of the doctors in the United States had paid ties to Wall Street investors . . . The unofficial number was probably much higher.”

It’s difficult to imagine how any public official acquainted with these facts could seriously contend that Wall Street should be deregulated. Yet the elected leadership of the United States seems hell-bent on doing just that.

About the author

Sheilah Kolhatkar was recently interviewed by the New York Times Book Review. The interviewer notes that she “worked in the late 1990s and early 2000s as an analyst at a couple of small hedge funds. . .” As she told the interviewer on the phone, even then she “heard people talking about the trader Steven A. Cohen and the stellar returns at SAC Capital, which he began in 1992.” Kolhatkar explained why she left the hedge fund industry after the dot-com bust and went into print journalism instead. “I could not handle the stress of making imperfect decisions based on incomplete information with other people’s money . . . I didn’t have the personality for it.” Before signing on with The New Yorker in 2016, Kolhatkar was a features editor and national correspondent at Bloomberg Businessweek."

Black Edge Inside Information Dirty Money and the Quest to Bring Down the Most Wanted Man on Wall Street Sheelah Kolhatkar Books Reviews

  • This is a book giving great insight into the American phenomena of the rich getting richer by any means and doing so with impunity. According to the author, there are three different types of edge, or information a hedge fund trader can obtain before trading a securty. There's "white" edge, which is information known to the general public that anyone can find; there is "gray edge", or information that's not quite proprietary, but only available to people familiar with the inside workings of a particular company; and finally there is "black edge", which is proprietary, supposed to be held in confidence, and can have clear positive or negative impact on a stock's price. The latter is illegal, of course, and the essence of insider trading, but also the trader who uses black edge information has a distinct advantage over the millions common folk investors. Some of the characters working for SAC finally did receive justice by falling on their swords and refusing to cooperate with the SEC, whether through loyalty towards or fear of, or both, of Steven Cohen. Ultimately, this book is about SAC and Steven Cohen, and company and its founder who made unheard of profits year over year through the constant use of "black edge." Some paid the price, however Cohen never did. In America, billionaires can do virtually whatever they want, and they influence our lives more than we realize.

If you're interested in white-collar crime, particularly securities fraud, you are probably familiar with "Den of Thieves," and excellent account of the excesses of Wall Streets Masters of the Universe in the 1980s, like Michael Milken. "Black Edge" is a 21st century continuation of the tale, with the main difference being that the bad guy not only eludes justice, but he continues to prosper, unlike what happened to Michael Milken. "Black Edge" reads like a cross between crime fiction and a primer on high finance, meaning it's tautly written, the story flows beautifully, and the author Sheelah Kolhatkar weaves together an extremely complex array of characters into a well structured and easily comprehended narrative. Any negative review I've read of this book up to February 17, 2017 is entirely bogus and illegitimate, written by people who know, or are the people themselves, who are painted in an unflattering light in this book. Don't expect a feel good book with a justice prevails outlook, however. In 21st century America, with the undoubted further de-regulation of Wall Street that is to come in the future, those that think laws are for suckers will continue to prosper at the little guy's expense.

P.S. anyone who has read thus far and takes exception to the political overtones of my review, please keep this in mind I'm very well versed in Libertarian free market economics, as I've read a few classics, such as "Free to Choose" and "The Road to Serfdom"; while the free market is in theory a beautiful idea, in practice it's simply my opinion that the Steven Cohen's of the world need at least some regulations to help equalize the opportunity for all trading in the securities market, and to keep them from distorting the market forces grossly in their favor. I want to keep my review as apolitical as possible, and respect the views of anyone reading this. I hope it comes across that way.

  • This is a gripping account of a colossal insider trading scandal. It reads well and provides a great deal of insight into the processes both of gaining inside information and of prosecuting those alleged to have benefited from this. It comes across as a sort of drama - perhaps with movie rights in mind - and the author spends no time on the many ramifications from the drama, and that is her prerogative. My principal criticism is that the book is clearly written from the perspective of the prosecutors and seems to be something of a spin for them. (PLOT SPOILER!) Their major target escaped completely and remains at liberty as one of the world's wealthiest individuals. continuing to trade with impunity. The book does rather come across as an excuse for the failure to prosecute such a high profile suspect and is very light on criticism of the prosecutors for allowing him to get away. My subordinate criticism is that Cohen is painted as a sort of pantomime villain, who gets booed every time he steps on stage. I have no doubt that all the ugly facts presented about him are true, simply because no publisher would risk libelling someone as wealthy as this. However, one suspects that the author has chosen to omit favourable aspects of his character and so he comes across as two- rather than three-dimensional. For example, the author has a great dramatic subplot in that his first wife, in a sort of "nor hell a fury like a woman scorned" moment, fed damning evidence to the prosecutors and filed a lawsuit alleging that she had been defrauded in the divorce settlement. The ex-wife's side is given much coverage, but the fact that her lawsuit was dismissed gets just a short sentence. These, however, are minor points this is one of the most gripping books I have read this year and I am happy to recommend it.
