Reflections on the Art of Living A Joseph Campbell Companion Joseph Campbell Diane K Osbon 9780060926175 Books Reviews

  • This book only presents brief "sound bite" quotes of Joseph Campbell's essays. Also, the editors of this book have specifically selected quotes that emphasize only the importance of individualism, when Campbell also frequently mentioned the importance of serving one's society.
  • This is a wonderful collection of stories, lectures, and excerpts from Campbell's writing that distills much of his life's work into an essential form. I wouldn't recommend this to someone unfamiliar with Campbell's other works. It still has merit, but likely loses something without that context. But if you've already read and enjoyed Hero With a Thousand Faces or The Power of Myth (or, really, much of his other work as well), this is an amazing next purchase.
  • If you need to read reviews to decide if you want this book, you probably don't know enough about Joseph Campbell. As the title suggests it is a bedside companion with selected excerpts from arguably one of the greatest writers of the 20th Century. If you aren't familiar with the man, I suggest you get to know him better before buying this book. If you do know him and like his work, you will regret finishing the book and look forward to rereading much of it.
  • One of our great American thinkers of the last hundred years. I continually draw insight into my own life and how I approach the world through his works. We are all on 'The Hero's Journey' and it is when we hear and accept the call that we begin to truly become alive.

Campbell may have started as the foremost authority on the myths of the world, but he ended as one of America's most insightful philosophers on what it is to be alive. If you have never read Campbell, you must. I also recommend the audio of The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers.
  • Your survey questions cannot meet the quality of the book. This is Joseph Campbell in all his wisdom giving you words to live by. Nobody does that better.
  • Another crappy audible update
  • In my opinion this is more interesting to read than "Hero with a thousand faces". Perhaps it relates to his maturity but the ideas are presented in a more cohesive, less complex form. These take the form of two or so pages on each idea; like reading daily affirmations. I find the book full of very potent conclusions from this great man.
  • I have been a fan of J. Campbell since seeing his PBS interview with Bill Moyer. He is a remarkable man with great insight into the history of man but more importantly, the significance of how man worshipped and the role that played in the growth of the human spiritual journey. This book is good support to the wider body of work the Mr. Campbell created. It isn't a replacement to the full text of his books but it can touch the core lessons he talks about in one text.
