"I am currently serving as a Peace Corps volunteer (2014-17). And I owe some of that to the author, Travis Hellstrom. He even wrote one of my recommendations letters when I applied. And I even helped a bit with updating this edition of the Peace Corps Volunteer's Handbook. Everyone's service is different and writing a book to cover everything would be impossible. What the author does so well is putting together a guide of sorts that helps you navigate your way through application, staging, your service and what happens once you come back home - but always helping the reader reflect on their own experience instead of relying on detailed-step-by-step-account of a "typical" volunteer. By actively engaging the reader to reflect and document their own experience, it helps them come to understand how far they've come, how much they learned, and how grateful they are for the whole experience. Can you find most of this material elsewhere? Yes, but scattered in too many places. Are there blank pages? Yes, so you can write down your reflections for later review (when things get tough). In all, you won't find a better 'guide' in such a small package.
And if you find places in the Handbook that need updated or improved, send in those comments and suggestions to the author. Everything can be improved, including this handbook (and Peace Corps too for that matter), and that will in turn help future volunteers."

The Peace Corps Volunteer Handbook A Personal Field Guide to Making the Most of Your Peace Corps Experience edition by Travis Hellstrom Kevin Quigley Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
- Travis and I connected soon after he broadcast a YouTube video of when he first opened his acceptance letter to join the Peace CorpsMongolia program. I didn't know then that he would take my advice and run so far with it! I've enjoyed following him through online media ever since. His collected insights are a boon for anyone that's on their way to "the toughest job you'll ever love."
I read this with enthusiasm, because it stirred up a host of good feeling about my own time in-country, and I can personally vouch for the advice he's given as it unlocked several cherished memories about my service. Travis has distilled and efficiently presented the combined advice of over a dozen RPCVs and PCVs (and others) into one supremely helpful guide for anyone about to serve.
I hope you'll take his advice and invest in "making this book your own," because you really will change dramatically during your service. What better way to document your growth over 27 months than with a companion book, customized for your needs? - Just what I was looking for. Son served and now granddaughter is heading out. Perfect. Wished I had this for me son 30 years ago
- Gave it as a gift for a friend that is going into the Peace Corps, she loved it!
- Very helpful and full of information. The book arrived in great condition as well.

Everything can be improved, including this handbook (and Peace Corps too for that matter), and that will in turn help future volunteers. - Written in a down-to-earth style, this handbook was invaluable to me as I navigated the PC applicant process all the way through nomination. It also answers questions about what you can expect as a Volunteer. Whether or not you end up as a PCV, you'll gain helpful insights and tips for not only serving in the Peace Corps, but meeting challenges and living life as a better human.
- Clear, clean, and easy to use step-by-step guide.
Examples for everyone. I encourage the college students I work with to use Travis' book.
Travis is an extraordinary man who is a big thinker. I'm so glad he made this book! - I bought this handbook before serving in Cameroon (2010-2012), and I found it to be an indispensable resource. It helped me overcome my fears about the time commitment, it helped me grapple with what service meant, and it was a constant companion to me in my loneliest moments at post. If you have been invited to serve or are even just thinking about it, BUY THIS BOOK!!!! You won't regret it.
